Race Night

The team recently held a race night at Shaw Lane Rugby Club and thanks to  everyone who supported the event – horse owners, race sponsors and the people who came on the night – raised £620.81 for the Hospice – top stuff!

To finish the evening off, the six winning jockeys did battle in an all winners race – Mark Woodcock, Helen Kilner, Darren Sides, Ian Weldon, Nick Giles and Mandy Woodcock (all names to remember for the next event!). To raise some more funds for the hospice we auctioned these fine athletic sportsmen to the highest bidder to create six more owners with the winning owner and jockey sharing in some prize money. Nick Giles won by inches (about a quarter of a length) from Darren Sides who though disappointed to lose was delighted when he remembered that he was also the winning owner.

A special thank you to Neal Weldon, our Tote Manager & Race Organiser extraordinaire who got everyone involved, as well as to Marcus Cook our race commentator who raised many a laugh with his double entendres and his dry wit, as illustrated here;

The first was won by ‘Rampant Roger’ who broke the tape with his big *******
Race two was full of fun and frolic’s the heat ensured its ‘Betty Swollocks’
In three the punters went to mob it not Tolkien but Darren’s ‘Hobbit’
Race four they’d never seen the like of Ian Weldon’s ‘Don’t tell Him Pike’
The fifth then went to Samantha West as ‘Grumpy Bellamy’ proved the best
In our last race it goes to show if all else fails put your last pound on ‘Hard as Nails’

We’ll be organizing a further night, this time including live music and pie ‘n peas. Make sure you put Saturday June 4th in your diary and get in touch soon for further details.
